K J Somaiya College of Science & Commerce Partners with NSWAI to Introduce a Fulltime Diploma in Solid Waste Management

K J Somaiya College of Science & Commerce introduces a postgraduate one-year full-time diploma in Solid Waste Management, which will commence from January 2019. National Solid Waste Association of India (NSWAI) has been announced as the knowledge partner and it will be Mumbai’s first and only college to offer diploma in Solid Waste Management. It helps the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) in various fields of solid waste management.

The course was introduced to enlighten the participants with cutting-edge waste management technology, organizational and legislative developments, sustainable practices, financial problems and benefits of handling solid wastes. Duration of the course will be a year and any graduate from Science, Engineering, Medical Sciences and Management Streams (with a minimum of 2 years work experience in Solid Waste Management) is eligible for the course. The classes will be held during weekdays in the evening from 4.30 pm to 8.30 pm and /or Saturday & Sunday from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. Participants may be employed by government departments, Urban local bodies – municipal coirporations, private companies, NGOs, universities, research institutions, consultancies, aid agencies or international bodies such as WHO, UNICEF or UNDP.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. Sugandha Shetye, Dean (Academic Affairs), comments, “K J Somaiya College of Science & Commerce is well known as the leading institutes proactively contributing to the cause of Environment Education and environment monitoring.  In the past we have regularly hosted programs on Environment Management in collaboration with Mumbai Metropolitan Region Environment Improvement Society (MMR-EIS ), Teacher Training programs like Refresher Courses in Environmental Studies in collaboration with UGC -HRDC, Lecture series –Enlighten Yourself Every Saturday (EYES) in association with University of Mumbai, also organized our Intercollegiate event on Environmental awareness –‘Convergence’   to name a few”.

Founded by Shri Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya, in 1959, Somaiya Vidyavihar consists of 34 institutions, with over 38,982 students and 1,400 faculties. It aims at holistic education and is known as much for its science, technology, engineering, management, social sciences and commerce programs, as for its programs for academic studies in various faiths and cultures of India.
